The Building

The cellar door building design has been based on the desire to produce a stunning building that is both sympathetic to it's vineyard surroundings and well suited to providing a relaxed wine tasting experience.

The stunning building has an unique structure and the aim of the design was to produce a relaxing environment to complement the vineyard surroundings.The ambience lends itself to enjoying wine, food and music as well as the sweeping views across the vineyard, the forest just across from us, and the Donnybrook townsite just visible in the far distance.

The north facing aspect makes use of solar passive principles and the roof is the first of its kind in Australia to have a solar powered system embedded into its structure harnessing the sun's energy and providing a large surface area for collecting our rainwater. The large overhangs and double glazing throughout helps keep the building cool in summer, and warm in winter.

The building has a straw bale construction which has fantastic properties for sound and heat insulation, as well as being attractive when coated in lime render.

There are some upcycled and recycled materials which have also been used- for example, the tasting bar used to be a Bunbury bank bench, and old jarrah sleepers have been repurposed into windows.
